The Roti Rolls spinoff late last year took up residence in the downtown dive bar, which was then run by brothers Chris and Jim Condon. But unbeknownst to Green Door owner Cory Burke, the building belonged to their uncle, Ryan, co-owner of The Crab Shack, a local seafood chain. When Ryan Condon took over Big John’s operations, doing away with braised pig heads and kimchi grilled cheese sandwiches was high on his priority list, Burke says.
“He apparently never liked Green Door,” Burke says. “He doesn’t like our food. He hates everything we’ve done.”
Ryan Condon did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
Since inhabiting Big John’s, The Green Door has revamped the bar’s drinks program and redecorated its back room. Burke says the changes were extremely popular with savvy diners.
“We’re getting a younger, food-and-beverage crowd,” he says. “Sales have gone up. It’s been an awesome transition.”
Although Burke had an informal two-year agreement with the Condon brothers, he knew it wouldn’t last under an owner who preferred fried fish and hush puppies. “We all kind of saw this coming,” he says. But the timing “shocked” Burke, who figured he could keep The Green Door going through the end of the year.
“It will be awhile until we have another bricks-and-mortar,” Burke says, adding that he’s considering relocating the restaurant concept to Washington D.C. “The truck would stay,” he promises.
The Green Door will offer an abbreviated menu through its last night, which coincides with Halloween.
“We’ll have a big party, go all out,” Burke says. “I just want to thank everyone. I know a lot of people love The Green Door and it will be missed.”
