Military Vets Raise Money to Compete at Kingsford Invitational

The 2014 Kingsford Invitational had most of its Veterans Day bona fides in order: The barbecue competition was scheduled to unfold aboard the USS Intrepid on Veterans Day weekend. But, according to Summerville pitmaster Russ Cornette, event organizers still needed a team of military veterans to compete.

Fortunately for the Kingsford Charcoal Company, Cornette and his crew were game.

“All three members of Queology are military vets and we will be representing The Folds of Honor Foundation,” Cornette writes. “We are going as the underdog team, I guess you could say.”

Cornette, Matt Gamble and Brian Roberson are now readying to take on winners of major barbecue contests such as Memphis in May and the American Royal. To fund their New York trip, they’re hosting a barbecue demo and tasting at Coastal Coffee Roasters on Nov. 3 from 4 p.m.-7 p.m.

Tickets to the event are $45 in advance, and the price includes beer pairings. Call 743-5082 or e-mail to purchase.

The Kingsford Invitational is scheduled to be broadcast next March on the Destination America cable channel.

  1. You should definitely see for yourself why they have won so many awards. Check out their wonderful BBQ at Queology located at 32 C N. Market Street. They also have great tailgate packages, just in time for football.
