Sean Brock is the lone Charleston chef up for James Beard Foundation honors this year.
Brock was nominated this morning for the organization’s prestigious Outstanding Chef award, along with Gramercy Tavern’s Michael Anthony, Lucque’s Suzanne Goin; Manresa’s David Kinch and Mozza’s Nancy Silverton and Vetri’s Marc Vetri. Brock , the executive chef of McCrady’s, Husk Charleston and Husk Nashville, was nominated for the same prize in 2012; he won the Best Chef Southeast category in 2010.
Local semi-finalists Jeremiah Bacon of Oak Steakhouse and The Macintosh; Josh Keeler of Two Boroughs Larder and Kevin Johnson of The Grocery didn’t make the short list, which was announced in a lengthy ceremony live-streamed from Chicago.
While Charleston was shut out of the Best Chef Southeast category (Louisville’s Kathy Cary of Lilly’s; Atlanta’s Steven Satterfield of Miller Union; Raleigh’s Ashley Christensen of Poole’s Diner; Lousiville’s Edward Lee of 610 Magnolia and Nashville’s Tandy Wilson of City House made the cut), FIG picked up a restaurant nomination for its wine program. Sommelier David McCarus tweeted immediately after the announcement, “My heart is beating out of my chest.”
Charleston will be well-represented at the James Beard Foundation journalism awards, which will be emceed by Matt and Ted Lee, who are also contributing the first course to the event’s dinner, described by the foundation’s Mitchell Davis as a salute to “sustainable Southern” cooking. Satterfield and Atlanta’s Anne Quatrano will handle the balance of the menu.
Two Charleston publications were recognized with nominations: The Local Palate is competing in the Visual Storytelling division, while Guy Martin earned an M.F.K Fisher nomination for a Garden & Gun story.
Journalism awards will be announced in New York City on May 2. The Restaurant and Chef awards will follow on May 5.
