Home Team BBQ Debuts Handheld Gamechanger From King of Pops

popgamechangerPresumably nobody ever wished the Gamechanger, Home Team BBQ’s signature iced cocktail, was stronger. But for drinkers who’ve fantasized about a stiffer version of the Painkiller riff, the local chain’s introducing a fully-frozen Gamechanger-on-a-stick.

Starting this weekend, Home Team’s Sullivan’s Island location will be serving up Gamechanger Pops, created by King of Pops. The West Ashley location will start selling the $6 treats in early May.

“The pops came about when Home Team catering director Hope Cleveland ran into (King of Pops owner) Andy (McCarthy) and they joked about the idea,” Home Team publicist Angel Postell says. “The idea is now a reality and it is pretty exciting.” Continue reading

Two Bar Crawls Scheduled for March

In case drinkers need more incentive to hoist a pint during St. Patrick’s Day week, the Folly Association of Businesses is again hosting its holiday pub crawl to  raise money for local charities.

The beneficiaries of the Mar. 15 event haven’t yet been announced, but the roster of participating bars and restaurants includes Loggerhead’s, Woody’s, Folly Brew Pub, Drop-In Deli, Planet Follywood, Crab Shack, The Grill and Island Bar, Surfbar, Blu, Rita’s Seaside Grille and Snapper Jack’s.

Southern Beer, Made for Mealtime

fullsteam_SLW1Attendees at this past weekend’s Brewvival, widely considered one of the region’s top beer festivals, were granted sampling glasses at the event gates. Yet forks and knives might have been more suitable for some of the ales being poured: Brewing’s vanguard is especially interested in highly complex, multi-layered flavors right now.

Sean Wilson of Durham’s three-year old Fullsteam Brewery takes a different approach: “My personal comfort zone is how the right beer can enhance a meal, or how it can facilitate community and conversation. Outlandish beers tend to try to turn a beer into an experience — I know because we make a few of them.”

Wilson acknowledges nuance isn’t always the most direct path to recognition and customer acclaim. But he believes food-friendliness could become a defining attribute of Southern beer. Continue reading

Southern Living Names Basico as One of The South’s Best New Bars

AR-130909748.jpg&q=80&MaxW=750&MaxH=350Basico’s updated country club vibe earned the Park Circle taqueria a spot on Southern Living’s list of The South’s Best New Bars, featured in this month’s issue of the magazine.

According to an editor’s note, the 20 chosen bars are “a throwback to a time when whiskey and Champagne were sipped by elegant folks in sleek social rooms,” minus the pretension. Basico at Mixson Bath & Racquet Club won praise for its summery, un-stuffy ambiance and spicy grapefruit margarita.

Basico was grouped with Nashville’s ultra-trendy Pinewood Social, the carnivalesque eating-and-drinking warehouse from The Catbird Seat team, in the “social club” category. Continue reading
